Buddhists across Asia unite for World Peace with a Special Dharma Program

February 8, 2025 – Kelaniya, Sri Lanka

The World Buddhist Community successfully conducted a Special Dharma Program for World Peace at the historic Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, marking a unique moment of international Buddhist unity through simultaneous spiritual observances across three countries.

In an unprecedented synchronization of spiritual energy, the Karaniya Metta Sutta was chanted 108 times simultaneously at four sacred Buddhist locations: the Sri Maha Bodhi in Bodh Gaya, India; the Ruwanveli Maha Seya in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka; the Buddha’s birthplace in Nepal; and the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara in Sri Lanka. This coordinated spiritual endeavor aimed to spread thoughts of loving-kindness and peace throughout the world.

The program at Kelaniya Temple began with a simple procession led by the Maha Sangha, followed by the lighting of traditional coconut oil lamps by devotees. The ceremony maintained its intentionally modest nature, focusing purely on the spiritual aspect of generating positive thoughts and goodwill for global peace.

“This synchronized chanting across these sacred sites amplifies our collective prayers for world peace,” said Mr. Buddhika Prasanna, Chairman of the World Buddhist Community. “The simplicity of our ceremony reflected the pure intention of spreading loving-kindness to all beings.”

The event, which ran from 2:45 PM to 8:30 PM, saw the participation of numerous devotees who joined in the chanting and lamp-lighting ceremony. The illumination of hundreds of traditional oil lamps created a serene atmosphere that enhanced the spiritual significance of the occasion.

This program marks a significant step in fostering international Buddhist cooperation and demonstrates the power of unified spiritual practice in promoting world peace.
